Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation Symposium 2022

On July 22 and 23 of 2022, the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF) will hold its annual International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma in Chicago, Illinois. MARF is the only nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to ending mesothelioma and its detrimental effects. Since 2004, MARF has gathered prominent mesothelioma experts alongside those affected by the condition for a symposium. The two-day event aims to bring together the entire mesothelioma community including patients, families, caregivers, and experts to find community and support.

The symposium will take place over two days – Friday, July 22, and Saturday, July 23, 2022, at Summit Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. Continue reading our recap to find out more about this educational event and what to expect from the 2022 International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma.

International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma Speakers

The Symposium will host the nation’s top mesothelioma doctors speaking on a variety of topics similar to past events.

Mesothelioma specialists such as Hedy Kindler, Shannon Sinclair, Travis Grotz, Raffit Hassan, Muaiad Kittaneh, and many more will speak while at the conference. These speakers will stand alongside world-renowned medical centers like Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Registering for the 2022 Symposium

If you would like to partake in the event, you can register at the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation’s website. The 2022 symposium will take place at Summit Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. Interested parties can attend the event in person for a small fee or via Livestream for free. Below are some of the discussions we at Mesothelioma Hub are looking forward to the most.

Mesothelioma 101

Shannon Sinclair, RN, BSN, OCN from the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation will begin the symposium by introducing the serious condition of mesothelioma and what to expect from the conference. Sinclair will give an overview of medical jargon, acronym meanings, how to understand data, and disease basics from 8:15 to 8:35 AM.

Systemic Therapies for Pleural and Peritoneal Mesothelioma

The systemic therapies session welcome to all will be hosted by Hedy Kindler, MD from the University of Chicago Medicine from 8:35 to 9:05 AM. The session will discuss systemic therapies currently available to patients including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, VEGF inhibitors, precision medicine, and targeted therapies, and will be followed by a Q&A session.

Clinical Trials’ Considerations

From 9:35 to 10:05 AM, Raffit Hassan, MD, NCI, will speak about clinical trials’ considerations. The session will cover clinical trials currently available, eligibility, considerations, administration, and locations.

Fighting Mesothelioma with Genetics, the Tumor Microenvironment, and the Immune System

From 11:20 to 11:40 AM, the fighting mesothelioma session will occur. The session will include speakers like Cara Haymaker, PhD, MD from Anderson Cancer Center, and Myuaiad Kittaneh, MD. This session will help listeners understand genetic mutations, the tumor microenvironment, and the immune system’s involvement in the development of mesothelioma and how scientists use that knowledge to develop new mesothelioma treatments.
