Pleural mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos and affects the lining of the lungs and chest (the pleura). Although rare, it is the most common type of mesothelioma. Surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation are often used to treat pleural mesothelioma.

Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining of the abdominal cavity (the peritoneum) and is the second most common type of mesothelioma. It is caused by exposure to asbestos. Surgery and chemotherapy are often used to treat this form of mesothelioma.

Pericardial Mesothelioma

Pericardial mesothelioma is a type of cancer that occurs in the lining of the heart, also known as the pericardium. It’s diagnosed in a mere 1 percent of mesothelioma patients, making it the rarest form of the disease.
